Dear Redmond School District Families and Staff,

On July 2, 2025, Governor Tina Kotek signed Executive Order No. 25-09, establishing a statewide policy to prohibit the use of personal electronic devices during the school day in all Oregon public school districts. This order was created to support student mental health, reduce distractions, and ensure that every student has the best opportunity for academic success.

What Does This Mean for Redmond School District?
RSD will fully enforce this order beginning with the 2025-26 school year. While we had already been moving toward banning cell phones and similar devices, the Governor’s directive simply accelerates our plans. 

Key Details:

• Devices Included: The ban applies to personal electronic devices of all kinds, including cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, and earbuds. 
  
  

• When They’re Not Allowed: Under Executive Order 25-09, personal electronic devices may not be used from the start of regular instructional hours until the end of the school day (“bell to bell”).
  
  

• Storage: Devices must be stored away in backpacks, lockers, fanny packs, or secured classroom cabinets during the school day.
  
  

• Consequences and Policy: The Redmond school board is developing district policy to align with the executive order. Consequences for violations will be communicated before the start of the school year and will not result in a student losing instructional time.
  
  

• Communication With Your Student: We understand this change may impact how you reach your student during the day. If you need to contact them, please call your school’s front office.
  
  

• Student Technology Access: Students are issued a Chromebook for instructional purposes, providing safe access to the internet, productivity tools, and email for school-related work.
