Prerequisites: Instructor Approval

This course provides support for organizing and prioritizing study tasks. It is a productive classroom in which to complete school work, receive assistance with research and projects, and get individualized instruction according to IEP goals. Students are expected to work on assignments for academic courses, improve study skills and make progress towards meeting IEP goals. This class will require students to demonstrate progress towards proficiency in the following State of Oregon Career-Related Learning Standards: Personal Management, Problem Solving, communication.

Functional Math (FACT)

This course provides instruction in discrete, foundational math skills to develop number sense and understanding of quantity. Areas of focus include identifying, ordering and labeling with numbers, determining monetary value, and basic calculator use. Instruction is provided by a special education teacher in a small group setting.

Functional Language Arts (FACT)

This course provides instruction in discrete reading and  writing skills. Areas of focus include comprehending and analyzing leveled informational text and comprehension and identification of functional sight words. Text is primarily picture supported to support comprehension. Instruction is provided by a special education teacher in a small group setting.

Community Readiness (FACT)

This course provides instruction in employability, social and self-management skills.  Community access, including informational interview and community resource exploration is a component in addition to the operation of school-based business(s).  Instruction is provided by a special education teacher in a small group setting.

Independent Living Skills (ILS)

Prerequisites: IEP qualifying for ILS
This course is designed for students to be independent in all areas of their life. Functional academics are taught to students to increase their autonomy. Vocational experiences for our students in the high school and community are emphasized. This course serves students with moderate to severe disabilities who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Real World Skill Development (ILS)

Students will develop reading, writing and math skills that are relevant, fundamental and readily applicable to tasks and activities required for successful community citizenship, employability and independent living.

Professional Trades Elective (ILS)

Course provides students with foundational knowledge and skills to make effective decisions, use career information and manage career plans. In addition to career planning, the course of study includes both contemporary and emerging technological resources as applied to specific industry sectors, as well as appropriate problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills for work -related issues and tasks.

Applied Math

Applied Math reinforces general math skills, extending those skills to include some pre-algebra and algebra topics, and uses these skills in a variety of practical, consumer, business, and occupational applications.  Course topics typically include rational numbers, measurement, basic statistics, ratio and proportion, basic geometry, formulas and simple equations.

Applied English & Communication

Applied English and Communication class is designed to assist students that take extended assessments and are working toward a modified diploma access to foundational language arts knowledge.  This class is designed to be repeated for additional credit.

Instruction is provided by a special education teacher in a small group setting.

 

Unified Sports

Unified Sports is a dynamic and inclusive PE program designed to provide students, with all abilities, the opportunity to engage in various sports activities while fostering a sense of unity and teamwork.  The class places a strong emphasis on creating an inclusive and accepting environment where students feel valued and supported.  Unified Sports promotes the development of physical fitness, motor skills, and social connections while also contributing to the overall well-being and growth of each student.

This class is structured around a seasonal format, incorporating soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and kickball/track and field in the spring.  In both the fall and winter trimesters, all participating students have the opportunity to participate in a regional competition that is sponsored by Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR). Winning at regionals can also lead to state and national competition.  No other Physical Education course at Ridgeview offers competitive local and statewide field trip opportunities like Unified Sports.
