STEM Physics
Course: SC361SSCA, SC361SSCB
Length & Credit: 2 trimesters/1 credit/ SC
Grade: 9
Prerequisite: None
Lab Science: Yes
STEM Physics is a two-trimester course for all incoming 9th graders. This course uses the ideas of patterns to explore both science and the math to support that science. Students will get the background skills knowledge (ie: math, graphing, tech, problem solving, etc.) necessary to move on to upper level science courses offered at RSD. By liaising with the community at large, students will also be introduced to STEM career opportunities via Oregon Connections and the Portland Metro STEM Hub.
STEM Biology
Course: SC130SSCA, SC130SSCB
Length & Credit: 2 trimesters/1 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Lab Science: Yes
STEM Biology is a two-trimester course. This lab-based course covers the foundational principles of modern life science as outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The course is framed around the themes of structure and function as well as interaction and change. In addition to the focus on the NGSS life science content, scientific practices and engineering design are emphasized throughout the course. Course content will include the relationship between molecules and organisms, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Technological, historical, political, and environmental aspects of biology will also be addressed. Content learned in physics and chemistry courses is built upon and expanded on in a biological context. Critical thinking, data analysis, and argumentation from evidence are also emphasized.
STEM Chemistry
Course: SC395SSCA, SC395SSCB
Length & Credit: 2 trimesters/1 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 10, 11, 12
Prerequisites: None
Lab Science: Yes
STEM Chemistry is a two-trimester course for all incoming 10th graders, upon successful completion of STEM Physics. This course uses the ideas of patterns to explore both science and the supporting math of chemistry. Students will use inquiry investigations and problem based learning activities to further their knowledge of chemistry. By liaising with the community at large, students will also be introduced to STEM career opportunities via Oregon Connections and the Portland Metro STEM Hub.
Earth Science: Astronomy
Course: SC311SSC
Length & Credit: 1 trimester/.5 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 11, 12
Prerequisites: None
Lab Science: Yes
This course is a one trimester science selective/elective. Astronomy explores the universe. The course begins with objects found close to home and continues on to objects found farther and farther away; from the familiar moon to far off galaxies. In addition to natural objects, Astronomy examines current space-travel and what may be in store for the future. Offered in (every other year): 23-24, 25-26
Forensic Science
Course #: SC302SSC
Length & Credit: 1 trimester/.5 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 11, 12
Prerequisites: None
Lab Science: Yes
This course is a one trimester science selective/elective. In order for each individual to be given a fair trial it is important for all of the jury members to be familiar with the methods of the police and forensic analysts. The course allows students to study how crimes are solved using the scientific method. Topics covered include, identifying illegal drugs using drug analysis, fingerprinting, hair analysis, DNA evidence, bullet comparisons, carbon dating, looking at skeletons of determined age, race, gender, and how he/she dies, and many more exciting topics.
AP/CN Biology
College Now: CN BIO 101/103
Course: SC350ASC1, SC350ASC2, SC351ASC
Length & Credit: 3 trimesters/1.5 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 11, 12
Prerequisites: Successful Completion of STEM Physics, STEM Chemistry, STEM Biology or AP Environmental Science. Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 possible.
Lab Science: Yes
Weighted GPA: 5.0 scale
This course is a three trimester science selective/elective. This course includes an advanced look at biological concepts with a special emphasis on biochemistry, molecular genetics, evolution, cytology, botany and physiology of animals. This is an excellent college level course for those planning to pursue a medical or other biologically related career.
AP/CN Environmental Science
College Now: CN ES101/102
Course: TBD
Length & Credit: 3 trimesters/1.5 credit/ SC
Grade(s): 11, 12
Prerequisites:Successful Completion of STEM Physics and STEM Chemistry
Lab Science: Yes
Weighted GPA: 5.0 scale
The goal of AP Environmental Science is to provide the student with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world and to identify and analyze environmental problems that are natural and made by humans. The student will evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing problems. Laboratory experiments support student content mastery in both hands-on and virtual experiences.
